The point of creating a WordPress blog in 10 minutes may seem a little exaggerated to a beginner but experienced people find it truly possible target. Beginners are generally confused about the sequence of actions required for creating a WordPress blog and this decision-making process makes it more lengthy. From my past experience, I can say that creating a WordPress blog or WordPress website is not a difficult task. I like to present the important steps for creating a WordPress blog in 10 minutes.

  • Finalize your Web host
  • Decide about web hosting plan
  • Decide about Domain name
  • Install WordPress
  • Finalize your WordPress Theme
  • Install useful WordPress Plugins
  • Publish articles

Let’s see these points in little more detail.

Finalize your web host

To create a WordPress blog or website you need a webserver to host your website. There are hundreds of web hosts available. You may do some preliminary research for finding good web hosting services. But you should consider the following points before finalizing Web host.

  • Quality of hosting services like the type of web servers, web server storage space, server up/downtime, email accounts, data backup, control panel, etc.
  • Price of annual web hosting plans
  • Quality of support services

Deciding about the web host may be confusing for a beginner but you may select from some of the well-known names like Bluehost, Dreamhost, Godaddy, HostGator, etc. These web hosts have a proven track record of good quality web services.

Decide your web hosting plan

To create a WordPress blog, you need to select a web hosting plan. Every web host offers different types of web hosting accounts like shared hosting, VPS, dedicated hosting, cloud hosting. In the Shared hosting plan, you get webspace in a shared web server means that server is commonly used by many web host account. Shared web hosting is the cheapest but it has few resource limitations. The web host generally declares unlimited space, unlimited bandwidth, etc but there are limitations. Space is generally not a constraint but bandwidth is a constraint that affects website speed in comparison to VPS or dedicated hosting.

For small or medium traffic conditions, shared hosting is equally good.
In the VPS i.e Virtual Private Server, the account provides dedicated bandwidth, dedicated space, fixed RAM, and other server resources so your website is not affected due to constraints of a shared environment.
In the dedicated hosting, you get a dedicated server for your website hosting. This is generally not required for small or medium traffic conditions. Dedicated web servers are quite costly which is generally used by companies or large firms due to traffic and security reasons.

Windows hosting or Linux hosting – WordPress requires PHP and MySQL database. A larger part of servers is based on Linux. You can go ahead with Linux servers.

Decide the Domain name for your website

The public will connect to your WordPress blog through your domain name. You would have thought about the domain name before creating a WordPress blog or website. There are different top-level domains available like .com, .org, .in, .name, .tv etc . Most of the web hosts provide the facility for domain registration also so it’s better to register a domain name through a web host. If you book a domain name with some other registrar then you need some more technical setup before starting the website.

Mostly, WebHost provides a free domain name for one year along with a web hosting account. This is an easier process as you get the domain name and web hosting account in a single account opening process. So you check the availability of the domain name of your choice and proceed for booking the domain name and web host account.

After you decide about the web host, hosting plan, and domain name, you can proceed to open a web hosting account along with domain name registration. Generally, both things are completed in a single signup process.  This takes 2-3 minutes.

Install WordPress

To create a WordPress blog, you need to install a WordPress application in your web hosting space. After you open your account, you can enter into the control panel of your web hosting account. Most of the web hosts provides a CPanel control panel. You go to the control panel and search the one-click install like simple scripts or mozo installs. If available then your WordPress installation becomes a matter of one click. If installation through simple scripts is not possible then you can proceed with the standard WordPress installation procedure. You may refer the previous article on a WordPress installation.

Select WordPress Theme of your choice

After you finish the WordPress installation, you can change the look and feel of your WordPress website by changing the theme of your WordPress blog. Login into the backend admin interface of the WordPress site and go to the Appearance->Themes section. Here you can see available themes in your standard WordPress installation. You can install new theme by clicking on Add New and then select theme either from the WordPress repository or upload manually. Theme installation is quite easy. You can refer to WordPress to help with theme installation.

Install essential WordPress Plugin

After you finish the website look and feel then you can proceed to add additional functionalities or features through plugins. Default installation has certain features which may not be sufficient for your requirement then you may search WordPress repository for plugins which provide particular functionality. Generally, each website requires a plugin for sitemap, contact page, performance, article sharing, website analytics, SEO, etc. Plugin installation can be done at later stage also but it is part of finalizing WordPress setup, that’s why I mentioned the need for plugin installation.

Publish Articles

After finishing the basic setup for your WordPress site or WordPress blog, you can start creating articles. You can publish articles on posts or pages. Post are aligned automatically in chronological order while pages have to be arranged manually. WordPress Blogs mostly publish articles through the post so you can go to Posts->Add New and create your first article post.
